Trading

We trade and barter goods and services every day. Each of us takes something to the market in expectation of trading it for something we want or need. The free market provides for innovation and opportunity unlike any other system in the world.

I think we get confused from time to time and believe that the results are the reason. This is far from the truth. Our free market system is NOT what America was built on! Yes, the free market is how we operate; but, America was built on honesty, integrity, character and hard work. If you trade any of those, the entire system will fail.

It’s never a good idea to trade eternity for today.

And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

Memento Anima

Stoic Philosophers coined the term Memento Mori – a Latin phrase that means “bear in mind your mortality”. In other words “remember you will die”. The Bible expresses this same truth in James 4:14. “For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

Getting acquainted with death and realizing your own mortality will help you live a life of honor and virtue, but it’s not enough. The real question is – What happens next?

Personal Accountability

Someone invented cigarettes/juules… so I am addicted to nicotine.

There was a wreck on the interstate… so I was late.

I did not have the information… so I made the wrong decision.

Realize that every outcome in your life is due to the DECISIONS YOU MAKE. Face the consequences of your actions, both good and bad, without excuse. Personal accountability might seem cold and hard, but it’s the way.

It’s the way of freedom.
It’s the way of success.
It’s the way out of your current mess.
It’s the way to stop people from using you.
It’s the way of living a life of no regrets.

Please read Jocco Willink’s book Extreme Ownership. It is the de facto manual on personal accountability that should be taught in every home and school in the world.

And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

Genesis 3:12 KJV

Base Hit, Better Life.

I was talking with Mark, a sales rep for one of our suppliers. He has been coming by the shop for so many years now, he is more of a friend than a salesman. We were talking about the economy, growth, new equipment, etc. and he told me his division was up over a million dollars in sales this year! He was very pleased and excited with the increase. I asked him how they did it, hoping to glean some information and ideas. His countenance changed a little from happy to calm and serious, then he said “The growth and new business we are experiencing this year is the result of 4+ years of hard work.”

The F-Bomb

FEAR has to be the most over used excuse of all time. I’m not talking about eminent danger fear; I’m talking about the fear we experience most in our daily lives. The fear that when faced… vanishes into thin air and then shows up the next day wearing a different mask. Conquering this elusive beast is not easy, but the odds may be stacked in our favor.

Sand In Your Box

I was having a debate with my 13 year old son this morning about the importance of school. Of course, he doesn’t want to go because it is stupid and a waste of his valuable time. “How is this going to help me in my future?” he asked. My reply, “Learning is like putting sand in your box. If you want to build a sand castle, you must first have the sand. If you refuse to learn, you cannot build anything.”

12 Percent Upgrade

Everybody has them; everybody needs them; few take the time and effort to analyze and modify them. They help us make mundane, repetitive, and complex decisions with speed and accuracy. You guessed it – I’m talking about habits. Many of our habits are helpful but some of them can really hurt us when the’re out of alignment with who we want to be. Let’s look at how they are formed and how to improve them.
