Experience and Assumptions

10 Monkeys in a room, one ladder with a banana on top. Every time a monkey tries to climb the ladder he gets sprayed with a fire hose. Soon, no monkey will climb the ladder. Now start swapping monkeys. First you will have 9 monkeys who were sprayed with water and 1 that has not. When the new monkey tries to climb the ladder the other 9 will keep him from it. Soon the new monkey will not climb the ladder. Amazing right? But it gets better!

If you swap out the other 9 monkeys slowly over time you will soon be left with 10 monkeys who have never been sprayed with water, but will not climb the ladder and get the banana. None of them know why!

Electric cars will never work at scale.
Tell that to Elon Musk.

If man was meant to fly he would have been born with wings.
Tell that to the Wright brothers.

You’re too small to play in the NBA.
Tell that to Spud Webb.

Go to school and get a job like everyone else.
Tell that to Steve Jobs.

Learn from the EXPERIENCE of others, but don’t believe their ASSUMPTIONS.

If you put in the work and know “what to use” and “what to lose”, you just might discover it’s ok to climb the ladder. 😉

Purpose

Ever been asked about your purpose? Ever thought about it? If so, I bet it conjures some lofty esoteric idea only a select few get to experience. I’ve got good news; purpose is pretty simple.

I believe our purpose is singular; HELP OTHER PEOPLE. As a parent, worker, friend, business owner, student, podcaster, auto mechanic, or preacher; our actions are all very different, but the baseline is the same. HELPING OTHERS.

Our personal goals must be made with purpose in mind. But, our goals can never become our purpose. It’s a very empty feeling to reach a goal that we thought was our purpose only to find there is nothing there. You can reach a goal but you can never reach your purpose.

When we set and achieve goals with purpose, we navigate life doing things that matter.

Humility and Position

From a position of strength; humility seems honorable.

From a position of weakness; humility seems cowardly.

The truth: REAL HUMILITY is holy, regardless of your position.

Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the Lord had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee:

1 Samuel 24:10a KJV

Potential vs Possibility

Hold a pencil in your hand over a table. That pencil now has potential. If you release it, gravity will move the pencil to the table. Nothing else is possible. Right? We often look at people the same way. With your looks, brains, talent, money, or position; you have the potential to be “X”. In other words…I can see you falling to the table.

The brainwashing usually starts at a young age and the “glass ceiling” has been installed by the time you are a teenager. Potential is a small box that other people put you in, based on their experiences.

Parents STOP telling your kids they have potential.
Teachers STOP telling your students they have potential.
Coaches STOP telling your players they have potential.
Focus on moving people into the realm of POSSIBILITY.

Potential says you can play in the NBA…Possibility asks can I be the GOAT?
Potential says you can be a doctor…Possibility asks can I save a life?
Potential says you can be an astronaut…Possibility asks can I live on Mars?
Potential says you can fall to the table…Possibility asks can I fly instead?

CHASE what is POSSIBLE and tell POTENTIAL to SHUT UP!

Conversations

I had a specific situation with an employee. This person has an excellent track record of hard work, dependability, and trust. I was totally caught off guard with their request.
Money or Benefits?
Had I done something wrong?
Are they quitting?
Alarm and questions flood my mind.

I had a specific situation with my son. I had a huge problem with the lyrics of the music he was listening to. I believe that your inputs affect your outlook and ultimately your life. I know a combination of the wrong inputs can create lasting problems.
Is he headed down the wrong path?
Did I teach him the right things?
Alarm and questions flood my mind.

Ever heard of Fisher’s Rule?
It states 90% of the way people treat you has nothing to do with you at all. Most of the time, IT’S NOT PERSONAL.

The questions that flooded my mind in both situations were self centered. What did I do? This is a great place to start but it is a terrible place to end. Thank God, both situations were resolved with real heart to heart conversations.

Conversations open the door for empathy.
Empathy opens the door to your heart.

… for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

1 Samuel 16:7b KJV

Talk is Cheap

On average, each of us will speak over 860 million words in our lifetime. That’s approximately 16.5 words per minute, every minute, every day.

Talk is cheap.
We use words rather than action.
We speak of tomorrow to avoid the cost due today.
These words have lasting negative effects.

Talk is cheap.
We can encourage another human being at no cost.
We can use words to take someone to a better place.
These words have lasting positive effects.

TALK IS CHEAP.
But given to the right person at the right time, it’s more valuable than gold.

Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

1 Samuel 2:3 KJV

Outward Focus

Naomi had an incredibly hard life. After moving to a new country with her husband and children, to find work, tragedy struck. Her husband and both her sons soon became ill and died. She was left with depression, incredible pain, and the loyalty of her foreign daughter-in-law Ruth. She decided to return to her home country with only Ruth in tow. So distraught with what had happened to her, she told her family to change her name to Mara (translated “bitter”).

At her lowest point when it seems she should throw in the towel and die, she turns her focus away from herself toward her daughter-in-law. She helps and instructs Ruth in the customs of the country. Long story short, Ruth marries Boaz and becomes the great grandmother of one of the greatest kings in Israel’s history, David.

We all have gifts, blessings, opportunities, tragedies, illness, pain, and sorrow. Thank God, we also have a choice. Choose to focus outward both in times of blessing and in times of need.

Stewardship is not about the hand you are dealt, it’s how you play it.

And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.

Ruth 1:5 KJV

Keep Doing

Cliché: Do the right thing at the right time.
Virtue: KEEP DOING the right thing.

I’ve watched my son achieved 4th degree Black Belt at age 14. He has been training Taekwondo since age 5.

My youngest daughter is now a cosmetology magician. She has been braiding hair as long as I can remember. (It’s amazing to watch)

My oldest daughter has started and currently runs multiple businesses. All while juggling the responsibilities of wife and mother. She started the first business in 5th grade.

I had my first interview with social media influencer Lauren Norris yesterday. The takeaway message from our conversation and foundation for her success… CONSISTENCY.

The oldest of these examples is only 23.

For the young people out there…be inspired. Keep doing the right thing.
For the old-heads out there… be encouraged. Some young folks are still doing the right thing.

And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.

Ruth 3:11 KJV

Pressure

We use physical pressure to accomplish amazing feats. We can move water uphill, cut steel like butter, and lift thousands of pounds by harnessing the power of pressure.

We can leverage personal pressure and do things that are almost superhuman. Climb snowy mountains in shorts, run 100 miles in a day, write novels, live a virtuous life, and give of our own necessity.

And then there is the power of peer pressure. Good or bad, it can influence us to act out things that are not consistent with who we are or want to be.

Use pressure.
Choose pressure.
Lose pressure.

Every situation requires us to pick one.

And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;

Judges 16:16 KJV

Payments

We can easily see that reading a book to our children helps them fall asleep at bedtime. It takes a while to see the lasting bond it creates.

We can easily see getting drunk at a party gives us instant attention. It takes a while before we believe we have to have alcohol to be normal.

We can easily see weight training increases strength. It takes a while to see the benefits to our overall health.

We can easily see more work produces more income. It takes a while to realize we allowed our most important relationships to die.

Payments will be made.
Dividends will be collected.

Long term thinkers and goal setters are usually receiving the benefits.
